Tips on how to make any on campus housing feel like home!
...a word sure to send shivers down the spine of every Marist student. I am a freshman this year and even I know that April 19th is a day I should fear for my life. Despite its terrible reputation, housing brings with it a promise of more space, new roommates, and-best of all, decorating!
I’ll admit it, I’m a freak when it comes to decorating. Finalizing my statement wall at home over winter break will forever be one of my favorite accomplishments (who knew nails and screws could pose such a challenge?). Anyway, making your room really feel like YOUR space will always hold a special place in my heart. Needless to say, I have already started decorating plans for a townhouse next year. It’s hard to make a dorm room feel like your space since it’s already been so many other people’s spaces, and you can’t exactly go nailing holes into the walls. Nevertheless, I’ve come up with a few ways to make your townhouse living room really reflect your personality!
Cover the couches! In most of the townhouses they have some weird patterns going on that will most likely remind you of your freshman year common room. Cover them up with a neutral, or playful couch cover and finish it off by adding some fun throw pillows!
Nothing says bleak and depressing like a plain white wall lit by sad, fluorescent lighting. Jazz your walls up with mirrors, shelves, and pictures! As much as I love a gallery wall, the look can be hard to achieve with Command strips and hooks. Here to save the day is the gallery shelf! Simply hang a shelf and let all of your wall items collect.
Finding cute storage containers is another hobby I cherish. Use large floor baskets for extra pillows and blankets so they’re easily accessible for movie nights with your roomies! Sturdy, square baskets can be used to store magazines and textbooks under the coffee table.
With these tips, and prayers for Upper New in mind, you’re ready to take on April 19th like a champ!
